Apple Land

My sister Rebecca picked 6 boxes of giant apples.
They were gorgeous. They were also free. In addition to being gorgeous and free they ruined my resolve to be finished canning for the year. I said I was done the day before she showed up on my doorstep with said apples.Together we spent the better part of 2 whole days preparing and canning the apples. In the end we canned no less than 35 quarts and 16 pints of apple pie filling. We also canned approx. 12 Quarts and 24 pints of applesauce. We split them in half and filled our pantry shelves with enough apple product to make a person dizzy. We also spent 16 hours together talking about life and wishing we could just get rid of the rest of the apples staring us down. There's been a lot of yucky family stuff in our lives this past few years and though my feet hurt beyond measure and my kitchen sticky factor will never be the same again, I wouldn't trade those hours with my little sister for anything. I'm not canning apples again next year. I mean it. We'll have to think of some other way to spend those 16 hours together.

  1. I really want to learn to can. I'm afraid - I'm afraid of the mess - I'm afraid of the time - I'm afraid of poisining us all!

  5. How nice to get some chat time with your sister, even if it did involve gobs and gobs of apples! And I have to say, having a pantry of apple pie filling sounds AWESOME. I think I would even make homemade pie crust if I could open a can of homemade filling. You go, girl.

  6. WOW! That's some serious apple time! Sister time is a very good thing though! My sister and I are fans of mani/pedis...next time maybe that's what you should try - you totally deserve it!
