The power of One

When I read Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle the first time there were many things she discussed that struck me as profoundly unbelievable. I've seen this statistic on a few other blogs lately, so I almost didn't post it here. But really, it fits perfectly with our Go Local challenge, so I couldn't resist (thanks for reminding me, Sara K.).

The power of one is really powerful when you think about it. So take heart in knowing that even if you only come up with one local meal all summer, you've made a difference.

If every US citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week. That's not gallons, but barrels. Small changes in buying habits can make big differences. -Steven L. Hop, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

  1. I LOVED this part of the book! It is such an amazing statistic. Thank you for the reminder. I am loving eating local and exploring all of the places to find great local food. Thanks for organizing all of this. You are terrific!

  2. When I read that stat, I was shocked. It really puts into perspective how we eat and its effect. I found Steven Hopp's little essays to be the perfect addition to AMV, too-he always had something really interesting to add to the chapter. I made my 'first' local meal this weekend-a breakfast, simple, but yummy and wrote about it today. I cannot wait to see what everyone else made this week!

  5. Thanks for the post! I started this book but got distracted halfway through. I even went and heard her speak when she was in Seattle (am a HUGE fan of hers!) I got my book autographed by her and her hubby too so you'd think I'd be inspired! Maybe now, I'll go an pick it up again since I'm in between good reads!
